In 2021, Helen Lindow of Marengo, Ill., reminded her daughter-in-law Sandy Lindow and granddaughters Melissa Ulman and Danielle Lindow that it was time they became Keepers of the Gate. Helen gifted Hadassah life membership to Sandy when she married Helen’s son Gene, and then to each of her granddaughters as they were born. Although Melissa and Danielle now live in Chicago, both are associated with the Elgin chapter.
“Mom is the most giving person,” Sandy said. “To honor her, out of respect and love, we all became Keepers.”
For Melissa and Danielle, they credit their bubbe with understanding their responsibility to Jewish community. “The Lindow family really lives l’dor v’dor,” Danielle said. “Helen has shown what it means to keep giving to our communities. Having this Hadassah camaraderie with our bubbe, it’s such a beautiful thing that we get to have for the rest of our lives. So we couldn’t see a better way than becoming Keepers of the Gate. It’s such a beautiful thing that we get to have for the rest of our lives — a beautiful tradition to keep going and going.”
Danielle added, “We had such strong female role models in our lives growing up and seeing the empowerment work that Hadassah does, that is something that resonates with all my family. Hadassah helps women to continue to grow, advance and thrive, especially within the Jewish community. And that's something we are individually passionate about. Our support for all that Hadassah does is something that we’re all proud to be a part of and our contribution continues that legacy.”
Helen currently serves as chair of Elgin chapter of the Annual Giving and Keepers of the Gate. For her, the Hadassah hospitals are incredibly impactful. After visiting Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, she said, “I was so impressed — what they do in research, and how they treat people — if you see it in action, you can’t forget it. When I looked in the waiting room, and saw a Muslim man, a Hasidic man and a woman in a burqa next to each other, it made me feel so good that we are such a beacon of light in this world.”
Last year, Helen helped the Elgin chapter raise $5000 for a hospital bed and this year they are focusing on raising money for Young Judaea scholarships, as well as bringing in new Keepers — including her sister Betty!
The Lindow family owns and operates a bowling alley and restaurant where Helen works several days a week. Prior to that, Helen established Lindow Appliances, which was in operation for 54 years. Sandy said, “Mom is a trailblazer ... she’s a fury.”
Danielle said, “Bubbe is really the matriarch of this family — her sisters have been active in Hadassah, they’ve been on many trips to Israel. We want to continue her legacy and what she stands for — that beacon of light that is Hadassah.”

Diane Glickman Cohen of Andover, Massachusetts, is a retired nurse, and an active member of Hadassah Northern New England's Merrimack Valley chapter. A Chai Society member since 2018, she decided in 2021 that it was time to step up to become a Keeper of the Gate.
Diane's love for Israel has grown over the years, beginning with trips as a teen in the 1970s, and later in 2017 with her husband. She became an Annual Member of Hadassah and later, a Life Member. Always inspired by the work of Hadassah, she loves the "Hadassah On Call" podcasts and reads the stories on Hadassah's website. Reading about our medical professionals helping in the world brings her great pride and satisfaction, and it is a source of happiness to her that Hadassah Hospitals are an "island of peace." This motivated her to become more involved with her own chapter, first becoming co-president and then its president. Currently, she serves on her region's board as co-ambassador of travel. Recently, Diane created a birthday fundraiser through Hadassah to raise money for Ukraine and was thrilled with the number of donors, as well as the amount of money raised!
Diane looks forward to visiting a Youth Aliyah village in November during Hadassah's 100th Convention in Israel. Her chapter has raised money for Hadassah Hospital and she can't wait to personally see the plaque that clearly reads Merrimack Valley Chapter. As a new Keeper of the Gate, she will also be seeing her name on the new Keepers of the Gate panels in the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower. "My love for Israel is endless," Diane says. "I have ensured that Hadassah is in my will to carry on my legacy for the future. It is my love for the work of Hadassah to be continued with each and every generation. I want to make sure my grandchildren know that we take care of one another."
Diane and Alan, her husband of 43 years, have a daughter, Hilary, who is married with two children and lives nearby in Reading, Massachusetts. Diane hopes that others will be inspired to become a Keeper of the Gate as well. She looks forward to speaking with others about her dedication to Hadassah.

We love a WIN-WIN-WIN situation and Hadassah Greater Southwest (GSW) had a such a win this past year! An extremely generous Keeper of the Gate who understands the importance and impact of annual giving provided a large gift to GSW to use as a matching gift challenge.
This anonymous Keeper then challenged the region to raise $50,000 in new and increased annual donations, and offered to match those donations two to one. After quick success with the original challenge, she added an additional matching gift opportunity and extended the offer to participate to additional selected regions.
It was incredibly inspiring to see how we met that goal in only three months, with 108 people participating: 52 were brand new annual donors and 56 were current annual donors who increased their annual giving commitment.
The results were an additional $100,000 donation, $50,000 in new and increased annual donations and 108 donors who feel great about making such a meaningful gift which provided additional funding for Hadassah's projects.
If you would like to offer your own matching gift challenge to your region for any amount, please contact Linda Freedman Block at lblock@hadassah.org or Crystal Stubbs at cstubbs@hadassah.org.

There is nothing more exciting than being together with fellow Hadassah members in Israel, visiting Hadassah Medical Organization and our Youth Aliyah Villages — and we hope you will join us at Hadassah’s 100th National Convention in Jerusalem on November 14-17, 2022.
The Convention schedule will be flush with fabulous programs and speakers and at least 20 different track options. Keepers of the Gate will be recognized with special ribbons and will receive a special surprise gift bag at their hotels — because you're special!
As always, we want to thank you again for your ongoing support. Because of your generosity, Keepers of the Gate provided over $4.5 million in 2021 in support of our life-changing programs including providing world-renowned medical care to 1 million people, delivering care to 6,000 COVID patients, and offering meaningful programs and services to approximately 1,000 students in our Youth Aliyah Villages!
We can't wait to thank you in Jerusalem in November. Join us and see in person the real impact your Keepers gifts have made!
