Using 3D technology as a guide, orthopedic surgeons at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem successfully reconstructed the shattered knee of a 21-year-old soldier who had been shot multiple times in a gunfight with terrorists in Gaza’s Jabalya neighborhood.
Evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem from the battlefield, the soldier, Shilo Segev, underwent emergency surgery to clean the wound and temporarily treat the knee. Major reconstructive surgery followed, with doctors using a 3D printer from the Israeli company Stratesys to help them determine exactly how to best reconstruct the knee. Bone was taken from Segev’s pelvis to replace his shattered thigh bone.
“I’m lucky to have come here into the hands of a professional team that understands bone restoration and reconstruction,” Segev told The Jerusalem Post.
He has since been released from the hospital and has begun rehabilitation, with the expectation of a full recovery.
