Hadassah mourns the passing of Irene Pollin, a pioneer in women's health philanthropy and a true woman of valor. We remain extremely grateful for her generosity, which made possible the creation of the Linda Joy Pollin Cardiovascular Wellness Center for Women at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem — also known as the Linda Joy Pollin Heart Center — where her legacy will continue to save lives for many years to come.
Hadassah sent the following notice to its National Leadership on July 29.
Dear Hadassah National Leadership,
National Hadassah is saddened by the news that philanthropist Irene Pollin passed away today at the age of 96.
During the course of life one either learns about, or has the privilege to meet, only a few "women of valor." Like Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah, Irene Pollin was such a woman.
Mrs. Pollin's contributions to the world were expansive and significant and ranged from providing adequate medical care to ensuring the rights of all people. She embraced life as an opportunity to provide others with the education, awareness and services that they otherwise would not have received without her support.
Hadassah was particularly blessed by her munificence and commitment to the health of women who, in particular, suffer from heart disease. In 2012 she established, with a major contribution to our organization, the Linda Joy Pollin Heart Center in memory of her daughter who passed away from this terrible affliction.
The Center serves not only as a medical institution but also as a resource to populations that would otherwise not avail themselves of public services by providing outreach and education about the ways in which to prevent heart disease. It serves as an international model of bringing health care to communities that are inaccessible to formal institutions of medicine.
The Linda Joy Pollin Heart Center serves as a testimony to the care and commitment that Mrs. Pollin extended to those in need. We are all blessed by her generosity and by the nobility with which she extended it.
May her memory always be for a blessing.
May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
